Many employers ask job candidates for pre-employment medicals to ensure they’re suitable for the job they’re applying for. The main drive for this is to mitigate the risk of work-related injuries and accidents that might pose a risk to other employees or the business as a whole.
Some benefits include but are not limited to;
A pre-employment medical screening covers two main areas that include a questionnaire and a medical examination. The questionnaire is used as part of your assessments and gives the health assessors a good idea of the type of medical assessments that are most suitable and safe for you. It’s also a good supporting document to help assessors identify your suitability for certain activities and tasks in the role you’re applying for.
It’s worth noting that these screenings vary based on the job you’re applying for. Some of the more standard aspects that you’d expect to find in all pre-employment medical screenings include;
Once the screening is complete, the assessor creates a report that outlines the outcomes of the assessment and addresses any specific questions the employer asks. This is then sent to the employer for their review.
As part of the assessment, you might have to discuss your clinical history and discuss things like:
Using the information obtained throughout the assessment, assessors conclude their findings and suggest possible recommendations to both the prospective employee and the employer. The assessor should also provide you with an idea about what information will go into the final report. In some cases, the report is read to you directly to ensure transparency.
If you have an issue with some of the content in the assessment and would like to make an amendment, it’s worth noting that only factual content can be changed. Any opinions or perspectives from the assessor can’t be changed or amended. This is for the safety of the potential employee and the business.
The final reports shouldn’t include any details that are seen as unnecessary medical or personal information. They should be concise, all-encompassing and remove any bias. Its focus is on providing medical opinions about you to an employer and nothing more.
For Employers, the obligations around Coal Board Medicals include:

Pre-employment medical assessments at One Stop Medical are comprehensive and depend on the specific requirements of the industry or job role. Generally, the assessments may include a thorough medical history review, a physical examination, vision and hearing tests, cardiovascular and respiratory assessments and musculoskeletal examinations.
Pre-employment medicals are often required by employers to ensure potential employees are fit and able to perform the tasks associated with their designated roles. The assessments not only safeguard the health of the individual but also reduce the risk of work-related injuries, helping to ensure a safe and productive workplace. Additionally, they can provide insights into any accommodations or adjustments that might be required for an individual to work effectively.
Generally, the average assessment may take anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours. However, the duration of a pre-employment medical varies depending on its complexity and the specific tests required. Contact us for more information.
All your personal and medical information is kept confidential and is only shared with relevant parties, such as your potential employer, with your explicit consent. All records are stored securely in accordance with privacy regulations and standards.
While not always legally mandatory, many industries consider pre-employment medical evaluations essential because of the nature of the work involved. Employers often make job offers conditional upon the successful completion of a pre-employment medical to ensure workplace safety and productivity.
It's recommended to wear comfortable clothing. If vision tests are part of the screening, bring along your prescription glasses or contact lenses. Ensure you're well-rested and hydrated and have a list of any medications or treatments you're currently undergoing.
The outcome of the pre-employment medical is sent to the company you want to work for. The results are not necessarily made available to you. If you are concerned about any particular aspect, the doctor can send information to your usual GP, who can then discuss the results with you.
No. The nature and depth of the medical depend on the specific requirements of the job role and industry. For example, a role involving heavy machinery might have a more stringent hearing and vision test compared to a desk job. It's always tailored to ensure the safety and well-being of the prospective employee.
Usually, no follow-ups are required unless there are specific concerns or if additional tests are recommended. If this is the case, we will discuss the next steps with you during your initial assessment.
Yes, while both involve a series of medical tests, pre-employment medical focuses on the individual's ability to perform specific job tasks safely and efficiently. In contrast, a regular health check-up is broader and focuses on overall health, early detection of potential health issues and preventive care.
